Google says the average AI Mode query in the U.S. is about three times longer than a traditional Google search. Users ask more detailed questions, continue with follow-ups and increasingly search with voice and images. For SEO and GEO, this means optimizing for complete information needs rather than short keywords alone.
What does Google’s data show?
In May 2026 Google reported that AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional queries. More than one in six U.S. searches use voice or images, and planning and brainstorming queries are growing quickly. These are U.S. figures, so they should be treated as directional rather than automatically applied to every market.
From keywords to complete problems
A classic query might be “SEO agency.” An AI query may ask which type of agency fits a smaller B2B company, how long results should take and what to verify before signing a contract. The second query contains several intents at once: fit, timing, risk, comparison and decision support.
What is query fan-out?
Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews can use query fan-out, where a complex question is broken into multiple related searches across subtopics and sources. A page can therefore be useful for one component of a broader question without matching the full prompt word for word.
Five ways to adapt content
- Answer the main question early and clearly.
- Cover natural follow-up questions such as cost, risk, timing and alternatives.
- Build topic clusters connecting service pages, guides and case studies.
- Add first-hand processes, examples and observations.
- Write in natural language without creating hundreds of near-duplicate pages for prompt variations.
GEO does not mean one page per prompt
Google warns against scaled content created primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses. A better approach is fewer, stronger resources that cover a topic well enough to answer multiple related questions.
Multimodal search matters
As image and voice search grow, useful visuals also become part of discoverability. Google recommends supporting text with relevant high-quality images and video when appropriate.
The practical conclusion
As queries become longer, content must get better at understanding context rather than simply repeating keywords. Clear topical expertise, direct answers and logical internal linking create a stronger foundation for both SEO and GEO.
