Google Search Console now shows AI visibility – how to measure SEO and GEO in 2026

Google has rolled out dedicated visibility reports for AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover. Here is how businesses can use the data for SEO and GEO.

As of August 31, 2026, Google has rolled out Search Console’s dedicated generative AI reports to websites worldwide. Businesses can now see which pages gain exposure in features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode and begin measuring GEO with Google data rather than assumptions alone.

What does the report show?

Google says the reports provide impressions, pages, countries, devices and trends over time for generative AI features in Search and Discover. The data also remains part of the overall Performance reporting.

What does this mean for GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization is about improving the chance that useful content can be discovered, understood and surfaced in AI-powered search experiences. The report does not create a separate ranking discipline, but it makes generative visibility easier to monitor.

Google remains clear that foundational SEO still matters: technical accessibility, unique and valuable content, internal linking and information that adds something beyond commodity content.

Measure SEO and GEO together

  1. Identify pages receiving AI impressions.
  2. Compare them with traditional organic search performance.
  3. Study originality, expertise, examples and topic coverage.
  4. Strengthen internal links to relevant services, cases and deeper guides.
  5. Connect Search Console with Analytics and conversion data to measure business value.

Avoid GEO shortcuts

Google explicitly says there is no need for special AEO or GEO hacks. LLMS.txt does not improve or harm visibility or rankings in Google Search, and there is no special schema required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

What should content focus on?

Prioritize information that is difficult to replace with generic summaries: first-hand experience, analysis, useful comparisons, concrete processes, verifiable facts and genuinely helpful answers. Build connected topic structures where service pages, guides and cases reinforce real expertise.

Conclusion

SEO builds the foundation. GEO helps us understand how that content performs when search becomes generative. Search Console now provides better data for making those decisions.
